When Emma Sulkowicz was raped by her friend and fellow classmate, Columbia University's administration was deplorable in handling the matter. The student who committed the act was not academically reprimanded for his transgressions, and Emma was left with no justice. Here I've depicted her walking a thin tightrope, with Columbia below as a foreboding cannon aimed straight at her. She is carrying her mattress, a reference to her Carry That Weight Together project. She carried the mattress she was raped on around for the entirety of the school year, representing how her assault is always weighing on her shoulders. She intended to do this until the student who raped her was expelled or academically reprimanded, unfortunately the university did nothing, and she continued to carry it all the way until her graduation. In the crowd there are audience members with red tape on their mouths, representing the No Red Tape protests that went on at Columbia due to the administration's inaction toward the issue.
